The first thing you have to know is that every sound can be defined by four different qualities: Duration, pitch, intensity and timbre.

1. FIRST QUALITY OF THE SOUND: DURATION

The duration of a note is how long the note lasts (is played for).

How to prolong or extend the duration of notes and rests:

There are two main ways to do that:

• Dot (puntillo): it increases the value of each note or rest by half.

Tie (ligadura): it links two or more notes that sound the same combining their lengths.
